During the era of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, an epidemic that only affected men spread, reducing the male population to a quarter of its original size. As a result, the roles of men and women were reversed. Women began to lead businesses and politics, and soon Iemitsu became the first female shogun. When she turned 16, she forced a monk named Arikoto, who was leading a temple, to become part of her "Ōoku" (inner chambers).
